Top Bloggers

Here is yet another mystery, why is is that every time there is a Top Blogger everybody swarms to view their blog and they don't realize that there are other blogs which have just as much information or whatever on it. I think it is because the ones creating the blog are well known for posting a lot of great blogs and so people want see what they came up with next. I mean I posted my blog at nearly the same time as a Top Blogger and their views and comments went up at least 3x what mine what of done in a day. People figure that the Top Blogger's blog is the best of the bunch therefore they pay no mind to look at the rest. It does not apply to everyone, though it does for many. Like many people I put my blogs out there for people to view and enjoy, I want them to see what I have to show but Top Bloggers get the majority of the views. Pretty much the Top Bloggers are set and by that I mean there are no new Top Bloggers; It is the same people every time. It is not set in stone it is just people have seen what they've done in the past and want to view more of what they experienced. This blog is one of my many published blogs on chess.com, I actually lost track and would have to count them all to find out. Guess how many got into the Top Bloggers spot. Zero. I still keep trying even now as I am posting this one. Well I got nothing else to say.

There is an interesting read on the topic at this link. Maybe the most important thing is to provide consistently good content. After that I think it takes a bit of luck or shameless self promotion. You have to be noticed by the right people. The way your blog gets read is if there are links to it in popular places. That's why Top Bloggers get read, there are links to their blogs on the front page of chess.com.

Best of luck!

Hi, ADK.  As a Top Blogger myself (my latest post is currently at the top of the featured list as I write this comment), I'd like to respond.

First let me say that I can sympathize with your frustration.  I have had similar feelings at various times in my life.  All I can do is offer you some advice which may hopefully help you.

I took the time to read a few of your blogs.  The first guideline is to find a good topic that will likely be of interest to both YOURSELF and to others.  I emphasize yourself, because if you are only writing to get people to read you, then you won't have the inherent passion for the subject matter and it will show up as weakness.

Let's take your recent blog, "Favorite Color?"  Clearly, you are interested in the topic, and to your credit I thought that this was a good idea.  I was especially intrigued by the fact that you personally find Black to be your preferred color.

That is unusual, and therefore interesting.  So what else could you do with that idea?  Here's what I would suggest, and you could perhaps even try writing a Part 2 to this topic.

Do some research about the two colors.  How many wins do you have as black vs. as white?  What about the average player?  Go to chessgames.com and you can find some interesting stats like this.  Try to find any masters in history that did extremely well as black.  What openings did they play as black?  Most people do better as white because of the first move advantage.  Find other players that prefer black and ask them why.  If you can find info like this, write about it.  It could be fascinating if you can dig up some unusual information.

All this will take time and effort, but that is the cost of entry to a good blog.

What else can you do?   Study how top bloggers write.  Alternatively (and even better), start studying some great literature.  If you want to be a good writer, study great writers.

I see that you want to be a scientist, doctor or entomologist.  Find some of those people that you admire and who wrote books for non-specialists and read them.  Go to the Science section of Borders or Barnes & Nobel, and you can find books like this.

Try reading Stephen Jay Gould (amazing writing by an amazing scientist).

Pay attention not only to what they write, but also HOW they write. Good writing is a skill and it takes time to develop it, in exactly the same way that chess is a skill and it takes time to develop.

Don't give up!  Perseverance is as difficult as it is important.  Do not get discouraged.  (This is good advice, in general, incidentally. Not just for the topic of blogging.)

As for myself, one of the staffers on chess.com simply read one of my early blogs, liked it, and put me on the Top Bloggers list.  That's how I got on.  That should encourage you because it means that the staff ARE reading blogs in general.  If you can impress one of them, you'll get on too.

But that is not to say that it will be easy.  You are young, and it simply will take time to develop your writing skills, your logical argumentation that you put into words, etc etc etc.  These are all the things that good writing consist of.

Good luck, and DON'T GIVE UP !!!!
