JJ Cale

JJ Cale (also J.J. Cale), born John Weldon Cale on December 5, 1938, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is a Grammy Award-winning American singer-songwriter and musician. Cale is one of the originators of the Tulsa Sound, a loose genre drawing on blues, rockabilly, country, and jazz influences. Cale's personal style has often been described as "laid back".

The only U.S. hit single recorded by Cale, Crazy Mama, peaked at #22 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1972. During the 2006 documentary film To Tulsa and Back Cale recounts the story of being offered the opportunity to appear on Dick Clark's American Bandstand to promote the song, which would have moved the song higher on the charts. Cale declined when told he could not bring his band to the taping and would be required to lip-sync the words to the song.

His songs have been performed by a number of other musicians; "After Midnight" and "Cocaine" by Eric Clapton, "Bringing It Back" by Kansas, "Call Me the Breeze" and "I Got the Same Old Blues" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and "Travelin' Light" by Widespread Panic and Eric Clapton are among the best-known.

Rodrigo y Gabriela are excellent. Thanks for that. I'd never heard of them before.

I've done my tutorial on Muse, courtesy of Frankie. We think your Gabriela is the Gabriela who sings Nothing Sweet About Me, which we both like, but we're still waiting for her to prpoduce anything else as good.

The JJ Cale videos are great. Is it for Dutch TV? Or Danish TV? There seem to be a few nervous session men in there. I love the way JJ almost cracks up when the over-enthusiastic tambourine player comes hammering in on cue -- "after midnight -- we're gonna shake your tambourine". I don't know how you play a laid-back tambourine, but it ain't quite like that!

So true, ez :) In our family it goes the other way around though ... mostly. My son introduced me to Muse and Rodrigo and Gabriella.

I've been a long-term fan of JJ Cale. This irritates my sixteen year-old son, Frankie, who just can't understand what there is to like. Only last night, JJ Cale came on the radio and Frankie groaned. Then in the same programme there was a cover version of After Midnight. Frankie has come to accept hearing me play Bob Dylan, but he imagines that I'm the only person on earth who could like JJ Cale and Howlin Wolf. Every time the outside world references either of them, he is truly perplexed. JJ Cale sounds as relaxed and cool now as when I first heard him in the 1970s. I'll make a point of plugging in the speakers and playing these videos later on, because Frankie is here in Aberdeen this week. After all, a father has to take care of a young lad's education...

Always liked JJ but underestimated the ease with witch he seemed to make music. His wife by his side btw, Christine Lakeland.
