Ruy Lopez - Part 10
Wilhelm Steinitz became the first world chess champion when chess was played with the all out attack mentality. However, in 1873 he introduced a new style of play, positional chess. Instead of sacrifice and gambits, he started giving priority to positional ideas.
Emanuel Lasker, summed up the new style as: "In the beginning of the game ignore the search for combinations, abstain from violent moves, aim for small advantages, accumulate them, and only after having attained these ends search for the combination – and then with all the power of will and intellect, because then the combination must exist, however deeply hidden (wikipedia).
Steinitz became infamous for setting up difficult defensive position, some even calling his style cowardly. However, he would prove his critics wrong time and time again. So without further adieu, let's take a look at how he defended against the Ruy Lopez.
