Video demonstrating defense against the Shoot

Submitted by Bodhidharma on Wed, 06/24/2009 at 7:08pm.

The shoot is the most dangerous technique a taekwondo practitioner can face because his primary means of defending himself namely the legs are grabbed and taken out from under him, leaving him helpless. So the taekwondo practitioner must know how to defend against it

See the video of some techniques involved :

Oh boy, I didn't think about the other fellow hanging around... It's a shame your colleagues don't want to learn any hand techniques... Some of those moves you showed in the demo would be very very effective.

Still, I maintain that a good sprawl will be effective in this situation especially if you throw tow hooks under the shouldures you can turn your opponent quite effectively... Nevertheless, for a sprawl to be effective in a 2 v 1 situation you will need to use a follow up technique once it is completed

Hello richyrich - thanks for your input....all very fair.

I didn't think of using the sprawl since there is another chap hanging around with unkind intent ! It's true - against an experienced grappler, we have little hope. My demonstration was aimed at my fellow taekwondo practitioners to give some thought to techniques other than kicking ( that's why my demonstration has virtually no kicks other than the ax kick which was a finishing move anyway ). The techniques I used were either throws ( including one sacrifice throw ), neck twists, a front chancery. Alas my colleagues still stick to the good ole kick...they don't even want to know any hand techniques !

I was a little surprised not to see the sprawl in there... There were a few throws which would work very well in real life situations. The monkey toss is a great tool against a shooting opponent and can, often times, be transitioned to an armbar....

Nevertheless, there were a few moves that struck me as ineffective in a fight against an experienced grappler, namely the leg sweep about halfway through the video (most shooters will be too low to even consider sweeping the leg--when I shoot my knees hit the floor, for example) and the face rake at the end of the video (as soon as the leg is caught it's going to be hard to defend without sprawling.

Still, all in all a good, fun video with a number of great techniques. Thanks for sharing!
