My Son's First Game

Submitted by BorgQueen on Wed, 10/28/2009 at 12:05am.

Hai,

My son, Daniel, just turned 5, has just played his first game of chess.  We didn't finish it, but I am mega proud of him!

Here is the [incomplete] game:

It's still on my analysis board, if we continue the game I'll update it :)

Thanks for reading!

I hope so.... mind you, if he wants to start another game I won't insist that he continue this one!

@ tushu, I am already MEGA proud of him.  He sees me on my computer and fiddling about with my anaysis boards and so I've been teaching him bits and pieces for a while now.  First was naming the pieces, which he got really fast.  Then setting up.  He can already set up all the pieces from scratch and understands "queen on her own colour".  Next I showed him how the pieces move.  Took him ages to get the knight under control and he still has trouble saying the word "diagonally".  Now we can actually have playtime!!

@ Kacparov, I have just now told him that people on the computer are interested in seeing him finish the game and so now he wants to.  So, yes!  We will complete it.  Something tells me I'm in for a loss!

@ fox4mcs, I hope one day that he will be able to teach me some things!!

SUPER NICE, Keep playing him and you tell him how every peice is moving and let him follow that, i can guarantee you 'll have a coming world champion in your own home :)

So, is the game going to be finished or is it forgotten?

Brad this is too cute. You should be proud of him. I reckon he'll beat you in no time.

I think once he has an understanding of piece value, some basic tactics (this will come thru practise and you demonstrating some tactics to him), his game will improve. keep us posted Smile

@ dema: My approach, should you be interested, was to first show him each piece and get him to name them.  Then show show how each piece moves.  Then keep questioning him on the names and how each piece moves.  Daniel really struggled with how a knight moves.  I hope you get there... would be good for Daniel and your son to have a game!

@ ssshana: Be encouraged, I'm sure he'll learn quick and he'll just love the time to play with mum :)  Just remember to allow him to "play" too and not be too serious... yet.  I made my peices speak... like I'd get the bishop and put on a kiddie voice and say "what's my name?".  Daniel cracked up when I did that!

@ scheduler: Thanks, Daniel loves playtime with Dad, which I think is the key to holding their interest.  Don't expect much at 2, or even 3, but you can at least let him just hold some pieces in his little hands and tell him what they're called :)  Mum might not be too impressed though by the sounds of it

@ kacparov: I won't push him; if he doesn't want to play chess, I won't be making him, but you can rest assured that I will gently encourage him to keep going... once we can play a game more often, I will try next to get him to predict -- look at what might happen if he does this or that, but that will only be after he can see most captures!

@ horned_owl: Not nearly as impressed as I was!!

I always have a good laugh at such games. Make sure he continues practicing and becomes a master some day :)

I actually learned how to play chess at the age of 5 as well :)

only 5? not too shabby there papa! You have every right to be proud of him. My boy is only 2 now, but soon, when mama isn't looking (she hates chess for warping her husband's mindTongue out) I'm gonna teach him. heh-heh.Wink

So cute! My son is turning 5 in December. He sees me playing chess online and he's very curious and asks about all the pieces and the moves i make. He seems to really be interested. You've inspired me to ask him to play and see how he goes :)

my son too just turned 5 . Sometimes I try to teach him how to move but he isn't very much interested until now . I hope i can soon play with him as you do with your son.

By the way, he is very good!!

Thanks :)   I am just so proud that he is moving the pieces correctly.  He tried a few power moves, like gxg6xh6xg7 (yes, that is ONE move! lol) but I won't allow him to play illegal moves... much to his dismay!

Not bad at all for a five ear old. Yeah they do have very short span attention.
