One of the most social

I've come to the conclusion that Chess. com has to be one of the most social sites that I've ever been apart of. I have a myspace, and a facebook, a blogger account, and all that but those are all people that I know in the real world, where as chess.com I signed up simply thinking it was a gaming site with no relationship w/ anyone on this site, but yet have met alot of extremely real and nice people. People who have helped me learn quite a bit about the game and advance my skills.

I've learned that people that play chess TEND to be different than most. In other sports you have an aggressive prideful competitiveness, where  as in chess while you have competition you have humbleness and helpfulness, it's actually.............................."love" it truly is. While i'm hesistant and most probably wouldn't use this word about strangers, but as far as I'm concerned it cannot be denied. And this isn't something that seems to be racial or gender specific, this chess-mentality seems to cross all boundaries, except for maybe the lower age bracket (early teens).

I wish more people played chess especially here in the northeast because this mentality is something more people need. This mentality is something that politicians and upper management of companies needs to adopt. Maybe we wouldn't be in the mess we're in if these people played chess avidly. But you never know. Maybe it wouldn't even change a thing.

Welcome, Colin

Online chess ethics rules are analogous to postal ethics rules.  You are allowed to analyze on another board.  If you click the "moves" tab on the game display you can access the online "analysis board".  This is an auxiliary board that begins with the current game position and allows you to play over potential variations before deciding on a move.  Of course you can use your own real board and pieces as well.

You are also allowed to use any book or database (games/openings/endgames/etc.) you like and it's not cheating.

But you cannot consult with another human or use a chess engine that actually calculates a best move from the given position.  That's cheating.

I am new to this chess site and am most impressed. A fabulous achievement on behalf of it's creators and one that has added value to society by bringing people together.

I would like to see one addition - I don't like playing more than one game at a time and like to play a game in one sitting - isn't this real chess ? So I think the timings should include 40 moves in 2 hours.

Also , a question. I play with a wooden Staunton set by the computor to simulate real play rather than cyber play. Please reassure me that this is not cheating.

Well said!!  Chess is something much more than a simple grid and some fancy pieces...

it's a medium that brings individuals together, around an intellectual discussion, or simply around some fun :)

It's yet another method through which we communicate, and I think each and every game calls for that kind of sharing.

speaking of which,  I am now a greeter!! ^^  yay me.

Oh, Andrew, I couldn't agree more about the friendliness of most of the people on this site. I absolutely LOVE the people with whom I've had communications here. Not everybody likes to chat -- and if they don't, I back off after the first "hello" -- but with those who do, I've found wonderfully fulfilling friendships, where love, hugs, kisses abound.
