Beware the Magyars !

In my "Getting to Know You" post I said that the guy who taught me to play showed me just enough so he could beat me easily.  When he took an interstate posting for six months I asked a Hungarian friend how I could learn to play the game properly.

He had won the Under 1600 section of the City of Sydney Championship the year before so he was well-qualified to be my mentor.  Then he took me to the Maroczy Chess Club in Sydney where I played for some years.  I liked the people who made me feel very welcome.

(I had a perfect score in the Maroczy Cup that first year -- six straight zeroes, unblemished by a single win or draw.)

There's a story about Sydney's Maroczy Chess Club  on my web page.  You can find it here:  http://tinyurl.com/6p8p9n
