Falkbeer Counter Gambit

It's great to have friendly opponents.  In a current game, playing black against the KG, I declined with 3...Bc5.

During the game my position became more and more cramped.  My opponent, Grolich, commented, "I don't like the Bc5 variations for black in the King's Gambit.  White comes out of the opening with a solid plus."

I asked what he would suggest and he gave me three choices:

  • Just take it and return it later with something like the Kieseritsky;
  • Play one of two counter gambits:
  • 1. e4 e5, 2. f4 d5, 3. exd5 exf5, or
  • The Falkbeer Counter Gambit.

Well, that sounded a lot better than the problems I usually create for myself so I asked my little one-eyed friend for help and we went searching the web.

This game is a Falkbeer played by Richard Jones and Adam Raoof in 1998.  I admire Adam's daring and am in awe of his ability to navigate through complex positions, but I'm not sure I'd have the courage to play the game the way he played this one.

But I'll certainly be researching both the Falkbeer and the Kieseritsky over the next few days.  Thanks, Grolich!

By my opinion the most strongest the Falkbeer Counter Gambit with 3... e4. The best example for this the Schulten - Morphy game in New York, 1857.
