You only get 8 pawns.

 

Seems like a lot when they are lined up all the way across the board. 

When you get to the endgame down a pawn, it might not seem like enough. 

You can get another queen, another knight, but there is no way to get another pawn. 

It is simple, plain, and obvious, but you only get 8 pawns. 

If it wasn't so plain, maybe we would think about it more and consequently play more like Philidor.
