Winning an ICCF game with ZERO analysis:

On ICCF where deep engine analysis drives most of your opponents' moves, it becomes paramount to be well-prepared in the opening. My own method is to create a database of all ICCF games played (they can be downloaded from the ICCF main web site). From there, I then extract the first 40 moves into a new opening book. This gives me a complete opening overview I can use to navigate pitfalls and maximize my chances against those monster machines out there.

Interestingly enough, I've found several examples of top GMs building their deeper opening lines based on ICCF games. The recent Nakamura - Anand game at the São Paulo Masters was an opening taken right out of the depths of ICCF theory. I caught people scratching their heads at the variation, and I had to clue them in that this line was actually quite normal in ICCF games, and Anand's choice was black's best scoring line on ICCF. I myself have just reached won position using purely my opening book made from ICCF games in the same opening:

In the final position, black is completely lost, and I didn't analyze a single move! All the moves came straight out of the ICCF database, which showed me that black loses 100% by the time 18.Bxc4 is played. Black should have played Anand's choice of 9...Nbd7 10.Nxc6 Qb6, which scores favorably for black, though I was prepared for that line and was fully expecting it.

So as you can see, preparation is just as important (if not moreso) than having a monster computer with houdini or rybka churning out moves. Without a solid ground of preparation, you can lose the game before your computer can save it, like the above poor guy.

huga1, please re-read the blog title. That should clue you in on the subject material.

huga1 I think FirebrandX wrote about his ICCF games and not games on chess.com. But I agree that since we are allowed to use DBs it should be possible to do it the way FirebrandX described.

This is really interesting. Some would say it is cheating, but the site rules doesn't specify you are not allowed to use ICCF database. I am wondering how can chess.com detect that you used that database or you used an engine Undecided

ICCF allows full computer use, so it has become a 'centaur' league. Simply using the computer to come up with moves is usually not enough to win. You have to use everything at your disposal, including human intuition. I've already logged several wins that the computer would have screwed up into a draw had I merely relied on it. The main aspect is of course opening preparation. Not even a super-computer can save you if you fall into a losing opening trap like the example in this blog.

They let you use engines to come up with your moves? I thought you can only use it as a reference database. If it is reference then Quad core would not make as much difference. However a larger database would allow it to see more lines.

Am i correct ? or has it changed into a computer league not a chess league?

By the way, my opponent resigned on move 25. Here's the complete PGN:

    [Event "WS/M/346"]
    [Site "ICCF"]
    [Date "2011.9.30"]
    [Round "-"]
    [White "Morrow, Wolff"]
    [Black "Silin, Viktor Aleksandrovich"]
    [Result "1-0"]
    [WhiteElo "2240"]
    [BlackElo "2164"]

    1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6 5.Bg5 h6
    6.Bh4 dxc4 7.e4 g5 8.Bg3 b5 9.Ne5 h5 10.h4 g4
    11.Be2 b4 12.Na4 Nxe4 13.O-O Bd6 14.Qc2 Nxg3 15.fxg3 Bxe5
    16.dxe5 Qd4+ 17.Kh2 Nd7 18.Bxc4 Nxe5 19.Bb3 Ba6 20.Rad1 Bd3
    21.Qc1 Qd6 22.Nc5 Rf8 23.Rd2 O-O-O 24.Rfd1 Qc7 25.Nxd3
    1-0

It's VERY rare these days to get such a quick and easy win on ICCF. It boosted my rating forecast up to 2280, and I've got 4 more wins waiting on resignations. Hopefully those wins will be enough to break into 2300 so I can play in the next higher up tournament bracket of 'master norms'. Getting there is quite a lot harder now with everyone sporting quad and even hex-core computers. It makes most fresh 2100s just a lethal as 2400+, whereas before rybka/houdini there was an actual strength curve.

I could just be very bad at locating it, but where exactly is the link to download the games?

I glanced on the iccf website and could not locate the download.
