We have all bought a Chess Program before at one time or another for PC/ Laptop (Well if your a fan of this site you most likely have.) But how many of you PlayStation 3 or Xbox360 have considered or have bought a chess game for said systems?
I know What you are thinking there's no way a chess game like Fritz or Chessmaster can make a successful cross over and still be as go as the PC/laptop versions. well I am here to tell you that Chessbase and ubisoft made an attempted to bring Fritz and Chessmaster to Console Gaming (there was a version of Chessmaster brought to the Playstaion2 a few years ago.
Now to my Review of Fritz chess for playstation3 by Chessbase
Let me Start with the Price which was £15 UK price from Amazon for a chess program that is a very Reasonable Price given that chess programs normally start at around £30 to £40
so I would give it 10/10 for Price I also suggest you buy it online as you may have trouble finding it in US or Outside of Europe.
Gameplay: This game has a good Range of opponents to Pick from here That range from 400 ELO to 3000 ELO so there is something for every Skill level here.
There are also various game Modes from chess 960, Classic Chess to Giveaway Chess, Rated chess games or if you want to play for fun with coaching then there is Friendly mode where fritz assists. 8/10
Adventure Chess: This is the Main Story in which you take part in a Fictional Chess contest that takes place in a Castle and along the way you meet the many different characters in the Game and you play chess with each of them but beware no match is the same one match maybe Classic chess and the next could be 960. This is Nice but too short it can be finished in 30mins if your any way good at chess or have a good grasp of the basics. 8/10
Historical Matches: There are 2,000 Best matches of all time to view in the game.
Which does seem a bit limited give it's PC/Laptop counterpart but it is a Playstaion3 we are talking about here not a PC/Laptop so I guess it's OK worth a 7/10 anyway
Analysis if your a beginner this will help improve your game but if you are a bit more advanced and want a more in depth Analysis then Stick to PC/Laptop versions because it does not have a Kibitzer 7.5/10
Graphics: The board and chessmen are nice and simple with 2 views available 2D & 3D I like 2D myself there are the usual board type s Staunton a Medieval set and a hyper Modern Set which is not too bad given that it's a playstation3 platform over all look is nice so 8/10
Overall I feel this game is not a bad effort form Chessbase to bring mighty Fritz to the Gaming masses and it is an excellent buy if you are new to chess or are looking for something to fill the Stop gab that has Been left by your last game of Call Of Duty or halo even an advaced player can find somthing here I think
The only real pain I have with it is there is no online play. So overall I give this a 8/10
