I Hate The Smiling Chessbase Guy

Submitted by Gonnosuke on Wed, 02/25/2009 at 12:06am.

So there I was, visiting www.chessbaseusa.com with my credit card in hand, pricing out the new Chessbase 10 packages with every intention of making a purchase.  I was feeling pretty good about myself because I was actually going to pay (gasp!) for a software product that I've been downloading for years.  It was as if I thought this one payment would absolve me of all my torrential sins.

After adding the package to my shopping cart I decided to look for a training DVD that had eluded me for years.  I browse through the different training packages but can't find it.  I did a search - nothing.  After being redirected back to the home page for what seemed like the 100th time, and growing increasingly annoyed with the circa 1999 site design, it suddenly struck me:  I Hate The Smiling Chessbase Guy

If you've ever been to chessbaseusa.com you know exactly who I'm talking about.  It's this guy:

I hate you Mr. Smiling Chessbase guy.  I hate everything about you.  I can't tell if you're the village idiot who won't stop drooling on the chess pieces or if you're trying to tell me that you're gonna sleep with my girlfriend the first chance you get.  I think both things might be true.

I hate the way you're hovering over the chess board.  I'm warning you...keep that crap up and you're gonna take a clock to the face.  I mean it.  Back the hell off.

And button up your damn shirt.  Do I look like Susan Polgar to you?

You call those chess pieces?  Size matters buddy.  And yours?  Well...sorry, but those pieces are too small to satisfy anyone.  And real men use wood.

Lastly, and most importantly, I hate you for looking so damn happy.  No one, and I mean no one, ever looks happy when sitting at a chess board.  It's just not done.  So put those pearly whites away and pick an emotional state somewhere between 'mildly annoyed' and 'absolutely miserable' and start projecting.  Really sell it too.  If you need some help getting into character go out and pick up the latest issue of The Economist.  I bet you won't be grinning then....

Uh huh.  That's what I thought.

ROFL I just read this today and it's hilarious. Have you ever used the old ICC beta app? Plenty of those types on the difficulty level screen there.

The minute I read this article I realized I hate this guy too. If I were to sit down for a little OTB action, it'd start with me punching him in that deprecating grin. I understand that sex sells, I get the fact that a pretty face magically causes goods to leap from shelves into eager customers hands. I simply assumed that a company would try to understand it's target demographics and then design a sales strategy around what the customer responds too.

This smug sonuvabitch makes me feel like the company is catering to 14 year old teenage girls and flighty mindless men and women who will purchase whatever mister happy is selling. I play chess, a game of intellectuals, of tactics, strategy, inspiration and defeat. I also noticed that a large majority of chess players happen to be, well face it, geeky men. You want to show some shirt draped open, smiling face, make sure it's a good looking woman.

I know this is really wierd, and more than a bit impolite, but I can't help but giggling when I play OTB. It's not like I'm much better or worse than the guy I'm playing, but chess always just seems funny to me. I guess the serious faces of the people I play also make me laugh...

Hilarious link!

As far as Chessbase is concerned, what makes the photo even more egregious is that they're not some huge Fortune 500 company or corporate behemoth.  I have no idea how many employees they have but I'm sure it's not a huge company -- small enough that the marketing department shouldn't be that out of touch with their customer base.  It's so bad it's counter-productive.  My bullshit detector started blaring the minute I set eyes on that photo....

Very good, pal, very good. =D But why are you cheating on chess.com? You and chess.com are supposed to have a strong relationship based on trust and loyalty - you've cheated on Erik and he may dump you for this... And the poor soul must have thought he had "something special" going on with you...

and I hate tv-spots, marketing papers and so on if there use chess but can´t put the pieces on the right squares. look at the picture. the king and the queen s stand not a the right place and the black shadow pawn must have a teleporter.all that they can have the pieces on the picture.

shame, if you want sell CHESS products.
