Spassky vs Motwani, Glasgow Simul 1987 0-1

Submitted by Gonnosuke on Fri, 08/14/2009 at 10:06pm.

A few weeks ago, streetfighter mentioned in the forums that Paul Motwani had defeated Spassky's King's Gambit at a simul that took place in the 80's before Motwani was a GM.  This came as quite a surprise because Spassky's King's Gambit record is legendary.  According to the major databases, in 30+ games against some of the strongest players in history, Spassky had never once lost a King's Gambit game!

I was so intrigued by streetfighters account that I set out to track the game down and find out more about it.  After much begging and pleading, a friend of a friend forwarded me the game along with Motwani's comments.  Enjoy!

motwani took in some of Laskers ideas of chess psychology.

People these days thing about pieces and not position.

Position wins games. It good to think that if you have more than 3 attackers you can sacrifice one to have a position that you cannot defend just like this game.

Great result!  I saw Paul Motwani at the Scottish Championship last month and considering he hasn't played for a while he surely performed well (perhaps not by his own standards?)! Cool

Beating a former World Champion under any circumstances must be an incredible feeling though!

Smile

PS:  This is the one that Andrew Burnett (Streetfighter) also played in, see below:
