How to win by learning no openings!!

Submitted by Graw81 on Thu, 02/21/2008 at 4:51am.

''I've found a lot of players (at least online) - only play book openings from memory - and when things devaite drastically from what they are mortally used to (especially in a 5-min game) - they can be easily briefly defeated. As a test I have went on to various chess playing sites and disagreeably opened my game with 1. e4 * 2. ke2 * 3. ke3 * etc. and won the games 90% of the time.''

I think i agree with whoever wrote this. I tried playing 1.e4 e5 2.Ke2 in a series of games online and i done rather well with it! It may have been hairy along the way but nonetheless i done quite well.

Its not that i dont have an understanding of openings but i played in tournaments for years and have quite a good opening repitoire under my belt. The reason behind it is; playing standard book opening moves allows beginners or even intermediate players to put their memory to test. If they can remember the lines as good as you then they should achieve quite a good position and any mistake on your behalf and surely you will be losing. Taking this away from your opponent by an early king move like 2.Ke2 will confuse your opponent if they base their opening play on memory. Yes, you will have an inferior position but perhaps only up to a certain point and your opponent probably wont be able to see their advantage. They will know that 'they should have an advantage' but they most likely wont be able to exploit it. You shouldnt be forced into mate either and if your a good player you should survive the opening and if your extra sharp you may even win in the opening if your opponent tries too hard to punish your early king move.

See my other blog post: ''My boungcloud attack games''. Here, i have posted a series of games using 2.Ke2 and you can see the results for yourself.
