True Sicilian Battle: The Gaw Paw!

Submitted by Graw81 on Wed, 03/26/2008 at 3:13pm.

Waiting on somebody to accept my challange online the board comes up on screen and a name i did not want to see: Swordsman from Japan rated 2200. This guy has trashed me in the past and i was thinking to myself that this was going to be another lesson for me. I decided to throw my usual opening repitoire out the window for this one and tried an interesting line in the sicilian called the Gaw Paw. I make an early opening error (this opening is not part of my repitoire per se) and it looks bleak after the opening for black. I have captured a pawn but white has a great lead in development and the initiative. Blacks pieces are difficult to develop and two knights are stuck on the rim. Nevertheless, if you are going to play the Gaw Paw i guess you have to accept this in some lines. The time control was 4min +3sec and black is in time trouble from pretty early on. After move 20 or so Blacks moves are all under 10 seconds, only one or two are at most 4 seconds. The moves had to be quite quick from early on so judge for yourself but there are mistakes nevertheless nothing so big that its not worth showing  the game to you.

You were in a pickle after the opening.  But you fought your way back and played well.  Good Job!
