Advice?

Submitted by Jerkwithorn on Tue, 01/29/2008 at 4:49pm.

Hey,

I'm a new player and can't seem to quite grasp the tactics involved. I constantly make stupid moves that either can leave my king or another valuable piece in a place where it can be easily taken advantage of. Got any advice for this new player?

If you have a tutorial, read that; others prefer books.  You may see www.chesstactics.org.  There are many articles here, including Chess Mentor.  Many choices really.

In your game v peet you dangled your knight on h5 and your bishop on h3 while your king was uncastled and standing on e8 vulnerable to a check.  After peet played 12 Nd4 you needed to notice all those factors.  I'm not going to suggest a move for you because I'm not as strong as any program you could obtain.  But in general if you keep your king safer you will have fewer such problems.  Don't worry even Kasparov has talked about having problems with loose unprotected pieces.
