My Videos

OK, I've been putting this off for years, but since this is my big year for firsts (turned 50), herein you will find videos of me playing my piano and my guitar.  All videos are unedited, and are first runs, so please, be merciful in pointing out any mistakes you may find.  I'm starting with two, but will add more, as I get them recorded and uploaded to YouTube.  Thank you for your support. Laughing

This one is a short Classical exercise from a contemporary of Mozart's, Carl Czerny.

This a bit more Contemporary, and is my adaption of a P&W song called "Merciful God".

OK, here's a guitar one.  Just recorded and uploaded.  Remember, these are all first runs, so they are unedited, and included any and all mistakes.

Well, MD, setting up a mic is rather easy.  If you have a mic input in your laptop, and you are not worried about the video quality, then get a mic that fits your laptop (usually a 1/8" stereo jack).  Or, if your acoustic has a pick-up (either built-in or pieao-electric), then come out of it with any standard guitar cable (1/4"), and get an 1/8" adapater, then plug that into your laptop.  Easy, peasy, lemon squezzy.

Thanks Jim.  I don't care aobut the video quality, just the sound.   maybe the mic in the USB headset I have will work, I'll test it.  Ambient for nylon strings though; just doesn't sound too promising.   Aren't there electric guitar to USB cords now-a-days for cheap?

    @ MD:

    • Well, Mike, yes, I am only using my digital camera, and it is not an expensive one.  However, it is not a cheap one, either.  It has a decent mega-pixel rating for video, and has surprisingly good sound for the small mic that's in it.  For some reason, the quality is not as good over the internet as it is directly from the camera, but I attribute this to the .mov format that my camera records in (only format available, as it's not an expensive camera.  Did I say that already?).  I have a better camera, with much better lens and mic setups, but it uses tape.  Yes, I can hook it up to my computer and download video that way, but it's a lenghtier process, and is much more user-intensive.
    • As to the capabilites of your laptop, the only way to be sure is to do a test run and see how it comes out.  However, unless you have a really nice rig, with a mac-daddy camera, my suspicion would be that the quality would be less than what my camera has given me.  The difference is due to the processing power.  It's kind of like gaming on a PC vs. a gaming console (a desktop vs. a PS3 or XBox 360).  Yes, you can actually get a much richer gaming experience on a PC, but you will have to pay 2-3 times more for it, and it will be more user-intensive to get it that way.  The gaming consoles are meant, and designed, specifically for that purpose, so all of their processing power is directed for that intended purpose.  It's the same with cameras, and video, vs. a laptop.  So, I suggest getting a point-n-click camera, with all of the goods, for about $200.  It should have, if available, about a 10X optical zoom (vs. digital zoom, which can go beyond the optical to the 40X-50X, on a small camera).  Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if one of your friends or neighbors already has one that you could borrow.
    • I have a digital delay, that, when I use it, can get "ringy" at times.  It delivers a rather full sound, and you may be hearing the bounce-back effect that it produces.  My picking technique, while not the best on the planet, isn't too bad.  I choose a particular sound set-up to accentuate my particular playing style, and ear.  Also, as I've been playing a while, I know what I want to play, and how to play it, so that it's pleasing to me; hence, my style.  All of that combines to bring you the sound that you hear.  Very little of what you hear can be attributed to the camera's recording or the room's resonance.  That's just the way I play.  I can't tell you what I'm doing, 'cause when I'm in the zone, I don't think about technique, it just comes out of me that way.  I guess I'll have to watch the video and try to figure out what it is that I'm doing.

Just great, Jim.  Are you just using the microphone in your camera?  I guess so.  It works!  Don't need anything fancy i guess. I don't usually like Somewhere Over the Rainbow, but I like you doing it. Nice pull-down. I thought I heard secondary harmonics, but i don't see 'em.  Is that a secret technique?

Do you think the built-in webcam and the condenser mic on a cheap netbook would work too? (I ask for a reason).

Small world, In 1961 when you were born I was working at Sea Bowl in Pacifica. I used to eat at Nick's Rockaway Beach Restaurant and my first son was born then.

                        He plays the guitar.

                             Bye for now

                      Quit worrying about any mistakes.

As my father would always say to me, "Quit worrying about the mistakes you make. The only person that will care about them is you." He was a professor of music.

I always found that he was right.
