Mate with Bishop and Knight

Has anybody in this site ever have to play Knight,Bishop and King vs lone King ? I leaned to play chess in 1973 and started playing in tournaments in 1983 and have never had to play this ending in otb or blitz.

It is known that most of us will never be faced with this ending in our lifetimes. maybe once or twice if you are lucky, I was taught this ending by a 77 year old chess player that played at the local club in 1986 and have never had to use it and after almost 25 years I'm not sure if I still remember.

There are some GM's who have problems with this ending and for those who doubt that here is a game

So if anyone has a game they played with this ending please post it here.

Yeah, it's definetly worth looking at, for if it does turn up & with da 50 move rule, if yeah slip up, it shall be a draw, keeps you on da edge, yo!

Once I had B + N + K vs K in an ICC blitz game with like 10 seconds to go and couldn't mate...I got the king in the corner and then had no time to figure out how to manuever into the mate...very annoying.

Many players will say it's a waste of time learning K+B+N vs K but they are WRONG! Even if you never have this ending occur in one of your own games it is very illustrative on how to obtain the maximum cooperation with a B+N in other endings or middlegames as well.

One approach to this ending discussed in Chess Life many years ago is to force the lone King into smaller and smaller triangles until he is trapped in a corner controlled by the Bishop (the only 2 sqs on the bd where mate can be forced). The Bishop controls the hypotenuse of each triangle while the K+N control the other 2 sides and the opposite-colored squares of the Bishop. However there are still a few tricks in this ending so it's best to learn it from GM Fine's Basic Chess Endings or another source that explains the technique step by step.

Another approach to this ending is to proceed as follows: chase the lone King from the center of the board to any edge, and then chase him into the wrong colored corner (unless he foolishly heads for one of the two mating corners right away). Next the King is forced out of the wrong corner along the edge of the board into the correct corner, where he is then mated. Again, it's difficult to keep the lone King from escaping the edge of the board without studying this ending in detail, unless you are a very talented player.

Alan, one can Mate with two Knights against a King, but one can not force the mate, it only can happen by chance, but Bishop & Knight against King, one can force the mate, like I said below, around 23 moves from any given position, yo!

The idea, is to get the opposing King, into the corner square , of the same color as your Bishop, hence a1 or h8, that game above, is a Holy shame, for people of their rating, just look, how the White King hugs the a8 square, or earlier on, jumps to the occasion to get to a white colored corner, Kempinski, Robert should of forced his oponnent to the other corner, & I is usless at chess, yo!

It's one of the very first end games study I did as a kid, when I got bored, I'd set the Computer up, with only a King, & I tried to get mate as fast as possible, normally, played very well from a dead position, it takes around 23 sharp moves, but I never played it here on CC, but I know a hell of a lot of people that cant get their a head around the blem, also, one's gotta take the 50 move rule into account, yo!
