I never used a chess engine EVER...or anything like it.In fact I think I've only heard of them within the last 2 years...But anyway I want to get better and I just recently peeked at chess.coms Download section and saw that they had some Engines.... so.......I have a question for the masses....What do you suggest I get for an engine??

I've heard Chessmaster is a great deal for the price and has multiple options for training beyond just an engine.  I use Rybka 3.0 but it's expensive and way overboard in terms of strength (but it's great for real-time analysis of GM games like the World Championship).  If you're just looking for an engine that you want to play against and nothing more, then look no further than WinBoard with Crafty Engine, both open-source (Free) software.

Link here: http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/winboard/winboard-4_2_7b.exe

The software will give you an opponent of ELO about 2600.  It can easily compete against a GM and will mop the floor with anyone below.
