Chess Brought To Life - Before The Opening

The sun rose over the flat, cold battlefield. Delicate imperfections kept areas darkened in the blaze. Two castles stood strong, casting looks of stone-cold intimidation to the enemy and obedience to their King. They towered over all on that cold morning, marking the edges of the field and waiting patiently for their release.

The knights muscle tensed under their glinting armour as they gripped the reigns of their restless charges, eager for the fighting to start. The horse's breath steaming mysteriously in the morning air, as unpredictable fire blazed in their focused eyes.

The bishop's caressed their daggers with long, sickly fingers. Their eyes closed gently, the two chanted prayers which echoed across the land, taunting and disturbing to hear. They wore the Lord's cross in gold on their chest, wanting however the sour taste of devils blood to satisfy their greedy mouths.

The Queen stood relaxed, her beauty a disguise as she glanced in all directions, planning only traps and lies. Her hair twisted and tangled in a non-existent wind while an eerie smile played around her mouth, speaking power and warning to the world. Importance and mobility, her weakness and strength.

The pawns checked over their equipment, exposed before all others to an imminent battle. They held in their heads thoughts of glory through advancement and held in their hearts their fellow pawns, brothers of the battle standing side by side.

The King seemed delicate in stature but in his face you could see confidence etched into his wizened wrinkles. He looked slowly up into the eyes of a mirrored King, a mirrored enemy, before pushing a shaking pawn in front of him forward across the marble.

The cries of war sang across the board to break the silence as the only equal battle in history began, separated only by better strategy and reaction - the game of chess had started.

This is cool. Describing the bristling army in the calm before the storm. Well done.
