King's Gambit? Accepted!

Submitted by Loomis on Sun, 04/20/2008 at 9:04pm.

A friend of mine is well known to play the king's gambit and loves open tactical games. I play 1. d4 and do better in a positional game. I typically meet his 1. e4 with the French or Sicilian,  but in this game decided to let him play his King's Gambit. Sometimes having fun in chess means coming out of our well trodden lines and playing positions we wouldn't normally get into.

After accepting the gambit, I was in unfamiliar territory and just wanted to get a position where I could develop my pieces and not get creamed on f7. Here is the result:

I'm sure there were positional principles that one could find in that game, but there is also something satisfying about viewing it as a purely tactical exercise.

12. Rxf3 is a mistake. Of course, it's not very helpful just to say a move is a mistake, you have to say what a better move would be and why! I did that in the move list and annotations of this game. 12. Qxf3 would have led to an advantage for white.

Your opponent has made consecutive blunders in the middle game.

 The most important:

11. Bxf4

12. Rxf3

The fischer defence is in the Kga.  Apparently Nf6 to decline the gambit is a bad move, giving white much better winning chances.

I was trying to find the better way to play the King's Gambit if you declined the gambit.  I did find that the Fisher Defense is good with this though:

As you can see it is a good defense against the King's Gambit and it allows some positional play.   But your game illustrates the chance to win when you take the pawn.  Good game.
