Blitz Chess

Submitted by Maxwell843 on Wed, 06/06/2007 at 12:11am.

In a fortnight at my local chess club I will be playing in the Blitz competition. This will be my first real competition and I am really looking forward to it. However last night at chess club I really struggled under the 5 min time control. I have been practicing on the internet with 5 min for each player and was going pretty good. I will keep getting more practice and should be fairly ready come tuesday 19th June.

HOW do other people find Blitz chess. IS there anything you do to practice or prepare for it?

Me and my friend played in a small blitz tournament a few years ago. That time we had no real experience in playing blitz games, so the best way to prepare for it was to learn to calm down during a game. So we just played a couple of lightning games (1 minute per game) just before the tournament. People were watching what we do ;) and we were playing really stupid moves mostly and having fun. But after this a 5 minute game seemed really easy, slow and relaxing!

first off, 5 minutes on internet is NOT like 5 minutes over the board! it takes time to move your piece, make a capture, and hit the clock. it's more like 3-4 minutes online!

secondly, tactics tactics tactics! you should read Sharpen Your Tactics! (i know, i always recommend this book...)

finally, get good at a quick system in your head. something like #1 what does his move threaten, #2 what checks are possible on the board, #3 what pieces are unprotected... etc)
