Fischer - Spassky 1972 WCH Game 6 (D59)
"The 6th game of the 1972 world championship match offered something of a rare gem - an opening played to perfection.
Fischer followed an analysis that had been prepared by Soviet masters and that had been published more than a year earlier. Presumably Spassky was familiar with it and the champion also was believed to be one of the fore most exponents of the QGD. But Fischer outplayed him every step of the way" - Fischer-Spassky NYT Report on The Chess Match of the Century p. 135
The top game has no notes for anyone who wants to examine it on their own, before or after playing through the annotated game underneath.
Halldor Petursson (1911-1976) was a famous Icelandic carictature cartoonist who drew 18 cartoons of the match for a local newspaper. L to R: Spassky's seconds GMs Geller, Nei and Krogius (all 3 in black suits); Spassky, Fischer, Fischer's second GM Lombardy (also Father Lombardy until 1978); not seen is Fischer's aide Fred Kramer. You can see all these great cartoons uncropped at http://www.dos.is/chess/3_halldor_postcards.html
