help

Submitted by OSUBUCKEYE on Sat, 07/26/2008 at 9:28am.

Please can someone please tell me how or why I am close to 1500 in tactic trainer yet my rateing is a current 1190 and dropping from 1365 or something?

I wish I had the time to study more, a few mintues here and there, reading parts of blogs, articles even the short amount time spent in book store going thru chess books is not working for me. If some one has any ideas on how a busy person can study more while rasing a four year old son and working, please let me know.

Teichman said chess is 99% tactics. At the 1000-1400 level, it's 99.9% tactics. Wink

But I agree it's good to know opening principles and the rook & queen mates.

Two of the best books I have ever read regarding chess were "Traps, pitfalls and Swindles (superb tactical training!!) and Aron (Aaron?) Nimsowitsch's (spelled Nimsovitch sometimes..??) "My System" which offers an excellent insight into "strategic" thinking and positional play. I highly recommend both books.

Chess is more than tactics.

You have to have a good "idea" of what the opening objectives for you, or the opening you have selected are.

Positional play is critical, not only will accurate positional play give you small advantages to convert into larger advantages using tactics, but it will put your pieces into a position where they can have the opportunity to execute the attacks you practice with the trainer.

Then there is initiative...if you dont own it, you wont be able to use your tactical skills.

Finally there is the endgame....very subtle and tricky to win or lose at times.

We need Sharp Tactics as often, as we can afford our Time and Brain to Joy it!

Well, I train while raising a 3-year-old daughter. I get up earlier and (usually) go to sleep later. I keep a tactics book by my bedside. ;)
