Tactics Problem

Submitted by Pawn_mower on Sat, 03/22/2008 at 3:39pm.

Here's a tactical problem in a game I played recently with a Caro-Kann Exchange opening.  I played on the Beginner Easy 7 min level.

I didn't see it at first, but after weighing 3 candidate moves, I made a decision that I found fun to play.   Now for the experts out there, I can totally see that Black played horribly and that's why I won.  I agree.  Any stronger player would have played differently against me.

I think you could have won in 5 moves if you sacrificed the E6 rook.

white Rook E6 to E8, Black rook F8 to E8, White rook E1 to E8 (check), Black bishop D6 to F8 (block rook), Rook E8 to F8 (checkmate). Am I missing something?

I suggested this sequence because it forces black's hand each move except for the rook sacrifice/swap and the king is stuck in that channel with the 2 pawns.

I suppose black could have left rook f8 in place but I doubt the computer would resist that temptation.

interesting sequence you picked.
