Double Bishop Mate

Submitted by Phobetor on Fri, 10/23/2009 at 7:39am.

A bit more than a year ago I posted this blog post about a game I played against an IM and won in 17 moves. Today I won another quick game against the same IM, and this time it only took 16 moves to win! However, I should mention that my score against him is +4 =2 -3, so I don't win this easily in every game we play ;)

It's funny to note that in the end, black tries to trick me with a mating attack, which would have worked (well, it would have won two pawns after 16. c3 Qxc3+ 17. Qc2 Bxb2+) if he wasn't mated himself!

Enjoy! :)

Yes. The national chess federation forwards the costs of the title application to the applicant, which are apparently € 50 for CM, € 70 for FM, € 165 for IM and € 330 for GM. Amazingly even IMs and GMs have to pay for their titles, and not so little either.

Note: € 1.00 is approximately $1.50, so the costs in US dollars are roughly $75 for CM, $100 for FM, $250 for IM and $500 for GM.

Correct me if I get you wrong... but you have to pay money to FIDE just to put the CM before your nickname?

lubo is right, it was a 5-minute game at the ICC.

And the CM-title is just a ridiculous idea from FIDE to make more money. I don't even want that title.

In the pgn file (there's a link in the right bottom corner) we can see :

[Event "ICC"]
[Site "Internet Chess Club"]
[Date "2009.10.23"]
[White "Me"]
[Black "IM QvC"]
[Result "1-0"]
[WhiteElo "2388"]
[BlackElo "2263"]
[ECO "B01"]
[Opening "Scandinavian (center counter) defense"]
[TimeControl "300+0"]

This means that the game was 300 seconds each without added time. 300 seconds == 5 mins... it's a classic blitz game.

And yes, Phobetor... please put some CM before your nick

What were the time controls?

And very nice game :), its nice to see that a strong player can beat IM's, regardless of being titleless (Btw shouldnt you have CM or something?)

I keep teaching such tactics to my students in my Chess Academy. Anyway, keep going, many will benefit.

Thanks all :) and I love those double bishop mates too, but unfortunately most opponents don't allow it :(

@lubo: My anti-Scandinavian repertoire is mostly based on my own experience with playing the Scandinavian as black. I hated playing the Scandinavian as white, so decided to play it as black. Then after a while I experienced how some variations are very critical and very hard to meet for black. In the end I stopped playing the Scandinavian, but now I do know those good anti-Scandinavian variations :)

Like in this game, I like delaying Nf3 most against Qa5-variations. Just d4, Nc3, Bc4, Bd2, Qe2 and d5 if possible. Else just castle long and harass that bishop on f5 which often has a hard time finding a safe spot.

Well Tiviakov and Ivanchuk play chess at level.... uh... a bit higher than mine :)... I'm more concern with the side lines that are left off-scenes. After seeing your games in scamdinavian ... I'm doing a bit better. I should defenitely prepare better for it. Do you have any good source?

beautiful game.  I still dont have much respect for the scandinavian as black though.  Surely the sicilian, french or ...e5 is superior.

I guess I'll just continue naturally ;)

Actually, I faced 3... Qd6 against an IM 5 months ago, and after making natural opening moves I saw I had a crappy position after the opening :( then I was almost lost, but fortunately there were alot of only-moves available and eventually I actually got a near-winning position. Then I messed up, almost lost again but in the end could just keep the draw :)

Tiviakov is actually playing the 3... Qd6 against Ivanchuk right now in the Univé Crown Group in Hoogeveen, the Netherlands. You can follow it at http://www.univechess.nl/2009/indexlive.html to see how Ivanchuk deals with Qd6 ;)

What do you play on 1.e4 d5 2.cd5 Qd5 3.Nc3 Qd8 or Qd6?
