Magnificent Puzzles (1)

Submitted by Phobetor on Fri, 01/23/2009 at 12:45pm.

There are many places where you can find simple tactical puzzles (for example Chess.com's Tactics Trainer or Daily Puzzle) or more complicated puzzles with highly unlikely positions, where the key move is a totally unexpected move. There are only few places however where you'll find puzzles which are complicated but yet simple. Puzzles with few pieces on the board, but with a very elegant solution. In the Magnificent Puzzles I'll try to entertain you with such puzzles.

Below is the first puzzle. The puzzle was composed by A. Afruniev in 1974. It's white to play and draw.

Vodac, 1. Ne5 e1=B 2. Ng6+ hxg6 3. fxg6 is an obvious draw, while 1. Ne5 e1=N 2. Nd7 followed by 3. f8=Q+ Bxf8 4. Nxf8 should also be a draw. Good points though; we mustn't forget to check that 1. Ne5 e1=N and 1. Ne5 e1=B also draw.

And if 1. Ne5 e1=R then the same variations as above apply. It's still stalemate if black takes on h6.

Can't black win if he promotes to a knight? Or a bishop, but two black bishops would be quite weird...

Dang, I almost solved it. I was one move short :( I missed that Bxh6 is a draw. Very nice puzzle though

That is a very elegant solution.  Thanks for all the great posts lately.
