Magnificent Puzzles (11)

Submitted by Phobetor on Tue, 02/03/2009 at 7:42am.

There are many places where you can find simple tactical puzzles (for example Chess.com's Tactics Trainer or Daily Puzzle) or more complicated puzzles with highly unlikely positions, where the key move is a totally unexpected move. There are only few places however where you'll find puzzles which are complicated but yet simple. Puzzles with few pieces on the board, but with a very elegant solution. In the Magnificent Puzzles I'll try to entertain you with such puzzles.

The 11th puzzle has alot in common with the previous puzzles. White seems to be hopelessly lost with his material disadvantage, but with some strong moves, white can force the draw. Do you see these forcing moves? The puzzle is composed by G. Kasparyan in 1960, and it's white to move. Good luck!

Most of these puzzles are actually quite useless in practice :) The chances of getting this position for example is really small. Only this exact position works, since if white's rook is on e5, then Kh6 can be met by Qd2+, while if the black queen was on b5, then Kh6 Qe8! would win the game. So only in this unique position this stalemate trick works :)

uritbon, that's true, but the reason the puzzle is "magnificent" is not only that the user can't find the solution :) Of course this makes the puzzle better, but the elegance of the solution is the most important factor, at least in my opinion.

But I agree, the last few have mostly been about stalemates, so I'll post some "white wins"-puzzles in the next few days.
