Winning with the Berlin Wall (7)

Submitted by Phobetor on Mon, 03/09/2009 at 9:46am.

Below is the 7th game in the Berlin Wall series. In this game, white had the curious idea of bringing his king to the action with Kg1-g2-g3xh4, but was punished for this. White's king soon felt uncomfortable and intimidated by the black rooks and light-squared bishop. And even though he managed to reach the 8th rank with his king on move 31, he was not rewarded a queen for it, but instead found himself caught in a mating net :)

Below is the game with annotations.

I love the comic effect of the king swearing under his breath and trying desperately to outrun the trap he had walked into.  Great game!

I enjoyed playing through your game and especially liked how you wrapped up the game with such a checkmate. Great stuff!

Konstantyn, I think black should be ok after Rd4 or Rc4 then. Or maybe even Bxf6 and Kd5 to get an active king as well :)

shambo, there are always such annoying anti-openings. If you play the Sicilian, you will also face anti-sicilians like the Alapin, Grand Prix Attack, Closed Sicilian, Morra Gambit, Bb5 Sicilian... And if you play the French you have to prepare for the Exchange French, Advance French, Tarrasch, Winawer, King's Indian Attack...

If there existed a good opening for black where white had no choice but to go for that opening, everyone would be playing that opening :) So whatever opening you play, you'll always face some annoying junk from time to time :P

Nice game, the  only problem for me is that I hate playing against all the other variations of the lopez, and I don't like to play against other e4e5 openings, like the four knights, allthough the king's gambit is good to play against, and so is the danish gambit (I pocket the material then simplify)
