Endgame Puzzle: July 28, 2009

"If you like the puzzles . . . track me :-)."

Can you name this great endgame player?

Hint: Rival of Kasparov, Undisputed World Champion from 1975-1985

*Disclaimer - Some of the problems have multiple solutions.  However, I will give the solution that I feel is an easier pattern to recognize or better technique.  Further, depending on the level of difficulty, sometimes I will not give the optimal response to try to imitate human play.  If you click the move list and solution, sometimes I will insert alternate moves and explanations (check and see).  I welcome discussion and feel free to ask or answer a person's question on the message boards!  I would highly recommend to practice the problems at a board too! *

Hope you enjoy!

The puzzles are great. Please keep 'em coming.

Am I just lucky with computers today, or does the "Play like Karpov" puzzle lock up after 27... Rxc2+ ? Following that move, I am suddenly playing White instead of Black.

1. a4 leads to a draw.  I think the position would end up with a rook pawn on teh seventh versus a queen and king far away which is a draw. (unless the pawn is on the b/g, e/d files).
