Why do you play Chess?

Submitted by RadioMitch on Sat, 07/26/2008 at 10:31am.

I find it fascinating to play chess.  I most like that it is a gentleman's game.  I run into players all the time that are encouraging and help me become a better player.

I can speak for me I don't find much joy in beating someone who ranks much lower then I do.  To me playing them is an opportunity to allow them to hone their game and learn from their mistakes.  Admittedly though there are far fewer players worse then I am in comparison to players who are better.  These are the players I enjoy challenging.  The wins are more satisfying and the lessons are better.  I do also appreciate that you don't see alot of bad sportsmanship.  Again this is a gentleman's game.

Ultimately I play here to learn and apply those lessons to my games.

My input is simple. Chess IS the beautiful game, no other. You never see chess opponents indulging in thuggery or even worse! To win or to lose, let's just play:o)

Oh man, where to begin.  To me its cultural, its art, its intellectual, its physical, its social, its beautiful.  It has a rich and fascinating history.  There are also many players in our day to admire.

I get lost in the game sometimes, but I'm alright, I just follow my own rhythm and intuition.

Also agree with you both Mitch and yoshtodd.

I play because it is one of the few areas in my life I feel I have control over. Everything is laid out on the board, nothing is concealed. Unlike real life you can pinpoint exactly what your mistakes were and fix them in the future.
