Common questions

What are the rules of this site?

http://support.chess.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=17

If you are posting on a forum, here are some suggested rules. These are not official Chess.com rules, but It would be a good idea if you read them anyway.

Or  click here.

http://www.chess.com/forum/view/off-topic/forum-posting-rules---be-nice--no-religious-or-political-debate

1) Read The Rules - The rules can be found at the bottom of this thread. Keep in mind that we can change the rules at any time, but it will help you to stay registered longer and posting quality content.

2) Read The FAQ -. It is amazing how helpful it can be in reference to knowing how to post links, etc.

3) Flame Wars - No tolerance will be given for this sort of thing. Just keep in mind that you are arguing via text on a public message board... Is there really a clean cut winner? I suggest you keep that sort of thing on someone else's board or some instant messaging service.

4) Keep Posts On Topic - So many threads go way off track when people decide just to start chatting about nothing. If you want to have a chat session, get mIRC or AIM, or MSN.

5) Read Before Posting - Odds are that most threads have already been covered before you thought of it. Thus just check back a day or two to see if the topic your so curious about has already been played out. It saves your time, and our time, it works out great like that!

6) Monitor Your Posts - If you double posted... Delete your second post. If you forgot to add something to your original post... don't make a second post. Edit your first one. The edit button can easily be found in the top corner of your post. We would love if you started using it.

We are trying to provide the highest quality Community experience for all of our members and following these guidelines is the best way to maintain a quality environment for all age groups. There is not a warning system for violators. If we find that you break any of these rules, your account will be disabled and your posting privileges will be removed. These rules are very basic and we hope that you read them fully. Thanks for your cooperation.

RULES

No Pornographic Material. Any sexually oriented imagery or links to such content will not be tolerated.

No Warez or Illegal Software. This includes linking to software, posting about it, and suggesting to get it.

No Attacks / Retaliation of any kind against a member, or group of members.

If you are a long standing member, act like one. Lead by example and assist other newer members rather then attacking them. We look upon our veteran members to use this opportunity to teach the newer members the appropriate way to use these message boards.

Posts in a particular forum need to stay on topic. If you want to talk about something that is drastically removed from the topic of a forum, please take it to a personal message. This was set up and designed for members to discuss issues not related to chess. We discourage off topic subjects from the chess forums.

No Avatar & Custom Title Abuse. These are a luxury and abuse of them will result in them being lost.

No spamming. Spamming is characterized by the initiation of threads or posts that contribute nothing to a forum, be it off topic or on topic. Examples include: empty bodies, bodies with few words that have no relation to the current thread or discussion and those posts that state they are spam, either to annoy or increase a member's post count. This determination is made by the forum Moderator or Administrator and is not up for discussion. Threads/posts blatantly advertising your website are not allowed and shall be removed. Continued abuse of this rule will result in the account being banned.

Enjoy yourself. The boards are intended to talk about chess. You can have a great time posting and we look forward to your feedback.

No Multiple Usernames. Each member creates their own unique username to suit their style, personality and this identifies them in the forum. Members should not create multiple usernames to voice or create a different identity. This can cause confusion, deceit and inconvenience to all members. If you’re caught doing this, the Administrator or Moderator can impose penalties such as temporary and permanent bans on the member’s account(s).

No All Caps Don't post a whole reply/thread in all capital letters. This is shouting on the internet and isn't considered very polite.

How do I get to be a greeter?

Chess.com Greeters

Every day hundreds of new members join Chess.com and sometimes they just don't know what to do. Well, everybody loves a personal welcome, so we would appreciate it if everyone could open themselves up to becoming a Chess.com greeter! A Chess.com Greeter simply plays an introductory unrated chess game and can help answer any questions.

How to become a Chess.com Greeter: Just go to your chess preferences page and choose to become a greeter and set how many games you are willing to play at a time. Then you will have unrated games start automatically. But don't worry - they don't affect your stats! :) Also, you don't have to finish the game with them. If either of you wants to, you can resign that game and move on to meet other people!

Who are you?

My name is Richard Jenkins.I teach English and work and live in France.

Why does it take so long for you to move?

I live in Europe and play when I can. I'll Make my moves, just be patient! I'm not always online, it just seems that way. seriously, i'm a busy person, so please bear with me. A 3 day per move game could take a month to complete. or more. or less. It depends on our respective 'time zones'
