I asked my dad to teach me, since the boys were all playing it at school and I couldn't figure it out from watching them.  I was in 6th grade.  Dad taught me on this "renaissance" style set.  Then we played every night, 2-3 games, for a few months.  Then one day, I beat him!  Then I beat him again.  We never played again after that, I began to beat boys at school and then dad took me to play in tournaments.  As an adult, I found out that my dad did'nt know how to play chess when I asked him to teach me.  He just read the instructions and then taught me.  It was the best gift!
