Need help !

Submitted by ScReaM on Mon, 01/14/2008 at 2:58am.

Hi i am Ahmad from Pakistan .

I recently participated in a chess tournament in which i encountered a player whose playing strategy was very awkward.

What she did she straight went for exchanges and there was no way i cud stop her.

She exchanged Queen and 2 bishops and then made a good move with her Knight i.e. checked me and had it in such a position that she killed my rook. And then  she took the upper hand and beat me .

Please someone help me and tell me how to counter such strategy !

OK i see u like to attack early too. The trouble with that is u leave yourself valnerable too, like this game your playing now against this 1300 player because u sacrificed a piece and didnt repsect your pieces or your development he should have punnished u with an easy mate that he missed lucky for u. Part of your trouble is you attack to soon for one thing and u play openings that ask them to attack u too like the alekhines defence in that game i saw. U need to study on attacking and y attacking without development is risky then u will know how to attack safer and break foolish ones too. To defend an attack i simply have to have better control of the important squares then them especialy the ones they want to finnish there attack on me with and keep calm untill i see a good counter attack nothing stops an attacker quite so fast as an attack coming back at them too.....

You need to study up on it thats all. You see what your not understanding is that these attacks if premiture are not so hard to stop and for u its about active defence and stopping the next wave comming before it gets really dangerous or stopping the attack by taking notice of how they may want to attack with and cutting it off while maintaining your own position. And that boring defence is y they dont get crushed so easy, might look boring but its designed to take to wind out of there attackers sails so to speak. Again i havnt seen your games yet so i will look at them on chess.com and see exsactly what your doing wrong ok cant promise anything but will try...

The problem is that when i watch masters game i find them they are very boring because what happens is that both the players are just defending resulting in all the pieces to be spread all over.

As far as i see it most of the people that i have played start attacking from the beginning resulting in a poor defence by me !

And those different openings such as sicilian , scandinavian ,dutch etc.

I cant work those out , practically speaking i am unable to use those in my games !

Hmm now that is a good question. Well the first thing u could do is analyise your game and find an improvement on that line and maybe study a couple of masters games and work out how they go about using the openings and how it develops into an attack. Another way is through trying new openings ideas u have studied up on and learning new attacking patterns through tactical books and puzzles or, through a book on attacking chess. Thats some of what i did to learn to attack better and make there life tougher. But sometimes knowing whats comming next and improving on it is better then finding new ideas though ok. So i hope this helpsa little anyway.......

I think there is a knight fork there where she 'killed' your rook.  Try looking at www.chesstactics.org.
