Fun with the Baltic

Submitted by Shivsky on Mon, 10/12/2009 at 3:30pm.

I've been shopping around for a sharp (and slightly insane) opening response to 1.d4 d5 2.c4 (and friends) for quite a while. I decided to have a little fun with the Baltic defense against a similar rated (USCF 1700ish) player. Quite rare and definitely sound-er than the Englund, Albin and Budapest (IMHO), I expected a modest amount of fireworks, but not quite the hand grenade that rolled onto the middle of the board.

Critical mistakes on my part later on could have turned things around for White with best play, but hey, in a OTB event, nerves matter and I think the attacker tends to have the benefit of doubt in these tricky situations.

All in all, a very playable system. Enjoy!

Very likely. I have some dated material from Andrew Soltis as my only reference to this opening, so I'm guessing the modern verdict probably trumps his suggestions.  Will look into more 3.cxd5 games..Thanks!

I played this 2..Bf5 line in the mid 90's as Dzindzi thought is would be efficient opening to learn with little theory and fit my style. It worked for a while until I got paired with the Fed in a NY State championship game and got crushed.  As more people played the opening the theory developed and there are several lines that give White a much easier and better game. Thus we decided to drop this opening and do the Dzindzi Indian with ...Bxc3 and f5.

I will have to re-check my notes but I believe 3. c:d5 is a very good line for White.
