Social Networking and Chess

Social networking on the web is big news, and the biggest social networking site (according to most measures, anyway) is Facebook, with over 200 million users.

Wikipedia says that..."A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others."

Of course, Chess.com itself is a social networking site - and the biggest chess site by far, bringing together all the chess community to celebrate our love for the game.

I joined Chess.com back in May 2007, a long time before I joined Facebook.  This may be relatively unusual, especially since Facebook recently celebrated it's 5th birthday!  However, I'm now an active Facebook user, and have discovered a number of famous chess names there (famous in chess circles at least!)

It didn't take me long to discover that Facebook also has a Chess.com application, which has grown to become by far the most popular chess application on Facebook.  My most recent game there is below - a nice victory that I was proud of until Rybka pointed out at numerous points how I could have played better!  My opponent grabbed a pawn and I punished him by tying him up in knots so that he could barely move! Cool

I've also recently discovered twitter, and like to tweet fairly regularly - with chess and Chess.com being favourite subjects! If you are a fellow tweeter, you can follow me here.

Innit lovely when you get a cooperative opponent.

Everything looks beautiful for them, then out of a clear blue sky...
