New 3D Boards at Chess.com!

Submitted by SonofPearl on Mon, 05/04/2009 at 12:10am.

The latest release of updates for Chess.com includes new 3D boards (sometimes known as 2.5D boards due to the board itself staying a square shape, rather than being distorted to give the impression of 3D).

There are also new board colours and other 2D piece styles.

Some examples!  The default is still the normal blue squares with 'normal' pieces.  Let's try the 3D Wood pieces with the Medium Wood board instead.

Notice that the 3D pieces animate nice and smoothly! The new javascript works a treat!

What about the 3D Plastic pieces on the Olive Wood board?

I like the darker black pieces on that one!

There are lots of other choices as well.  How about a marble green board with maya pieces?

Not only can paying members use the 3D options to display games in posts like this, but they can also be used when playing your own online games.  Have fun! Cool

I think these pieces are far too elevated to be of practical use.

But nicely rendered, though.

capture effect looks a little bit rough(have a little lag)and maybe if there's a animation of pawn prmotion then it'll be great...

It makes me so mad how even the tiniest things on chess.com are only for premium members. I mean the chess mentor and video lessons makes sense, but 3-D boards? I think free members shoud be able to use them.(But I'm getting a gold membership soon anyway =))

Um...Pearl, I did notice that all the new boards were for premium members only (the sign underneath the board), and that's fine, except that the Wood - Light board option doesn't show the sign, but it is for premium members (because I tried it and it didn't work). So I'm just letting you know that that is there...maybe a small mistake...(that the premium members sign wasn't there, and it really is for premium members)

Nice work. I'm happy to report that Opera Mini continues to be chess.com compatible (mostly) with the new javascript. Until Mobile Phone Chess comes to Android, that's my only option.

Now, for a truely useful chess theme, how about an Excel worksheet disguise to fool the boss?

This is for premium members ?? lol  :))

wel actualy i prefer symbolic view above any kind of 3d view.
The marble effect is a bit poor, why not simply take a photo af real marble board
when the paterns repeat its so non natural marble to me, it kills the marble effect.

:(
Sadly no improvement of coordinations to have them always on in blogs, as a reader preference, instead of a writer preference.
