One of my best games/How to not respond to the Scandinavian

Submitted by Sprite on Mon, 08/06/2007 at 6:53am.

This was a game I played earlier today of FICS.  I'm quite proud of how I played, and took advantage of the poor response in the opening by white.  The much better move is 3.Nc3, gaining a tempo for white.

Although this was a 20 0 game, it didn't last for more than 10 minutes.  Hope you enjoy it!  I feel it was a nice tribute to all the time and commitment I've put into improving my chess game in the past two months.

The way I look at it, the position was already lost (assuming I didn't completely screw up middle game), as the endgame for me is easily winning.  Neither of us were by any means good chess players, but it was an interesting game to play.

Don't u think Rg1 is a blunder too? by moving away white just gave away the pawn. And white shouldn't have made those sacrifices at the end right?

White could many things like Bb5 and other moves but white chose poor moves like O-O-O!

But anyway good plays by sprite!

didn't you just pull a scandinavian on whitelighter, too? good grief i thought Nc3 was more or less a standard given...

(which is why i prefer the marshall gambit, 2...Nf6--Qxp gives white such an open game, and loses tempo)

10...Nxe5 was great. i probably would have taken with my pawn (giving myself some vague reason of "pawn structure" or something equally unfocused). good for you.

Nice game! White has to play 5. Be2 to not get a much worse position. Then black should just continue with 5... O-O-O, and continue putting pressure on white's d-pawn.

After 7. gxf3 you already have a nice advantage, because white just has an isolated doubled pawn.

You're saying that you felt no need to play 8... Be7. But you can't play that move anyway! :)

 12. O-O-O is a big blunder of course, losing either a piece or the exchange.

You could have also played 14... Rd8! adding further pressure on the rook, when after 15. Rd1 Rxd2 16. Rxd2 c6 you get a simple won endgame of rook against bishop. It's always good to trade more pieces when you're ahead in material.
