7 tips to spot a cheater

Every so often someone will post a "new" item to the chess forum about chess cheaters.  The thread will grow in a very typical way with people bemoaning the cheaters and others advising us all to just get over it.  Once you've read one, you've read them all.

But what we really need are tips and tricks to identify a cheater and techniques for dealing with a chess cheat.

So to inspire others to share their insights, I'll kick off with my own list of seven signs that you may well be playing against a cheater on chess.com.

I will be most interested to read fellow chess.commer posts on useful cheat indicators as well as any clever techniques for dealing with a cheat:

  1. Impatience with opponents: cheaters push their opponents to make a move, to hurry up, when the game is set to '3 days a move.'

  2. Demands for a trophy: cheaters hassle you to give them a trophy for "their' great effort. It's not enough to just rack up an unbelievable rating.

  3. The personality of a software engine: it stands to reason that someone who is using a chess gaming engine to make their moves will have no personality. There is no sense with a chess cheat that they experience any real emotion about the game or have real things going on in their off-line lives that impacts their online chess play.

  4. They have a higher rating than you: Well... what could be a bigger clue than this?  How can anyone explain being beaten by an opponent with a higher rating and better game play other than by the fact that they are a big, dirty cheat.  It's just so obvious...

  5. Someone else has accused them of being a cheat:  it's difficult to ignore an independent claim that the person you are playing might be crooked.  After all, we all know there can't be smoke without fire.  So, for these cases, all we need to do is get the rope and find a suitable branch...

  6. Their knight is always wrecking your game: I don't about you, but only a chess engine can come up with those tricky manourvres with a knight.  Only a cheat can feign such a display of virtuousity with a knight and seemingly not needing the clearly superior powers of the the queen, the rooks and the bishops.

  7. Cheats don't want to appear to be cheats: Think 'Jim Baker', think the executives of Enron.  These are the people that are just too squeaky clean for their own good.  That is, until that day arrives when everything about them explodes. Yeah!  Anyway, what this means is a person who just seems too perfect to be true, probably is.  If you can't spot some kind of natural kinks in their presentation, play or participation, then be extremely suspicious indeed!!

Theres a bright side to this chess cheating thing. If you play hard win or lose your otb game should improve especially when playing against a chess cheater and his/her program!...That's why I alway say on line ratings  are FAKE!

I am currently playing in an online tournament. I started winning 2 games against the same guy, one with black and one with white. My opponent wasnt using engine for sure, as I started winning with a passed pawn in every game and some more advantage. At certain point, I could see how he started using engine. I have learnt chess against engines, no teachers, no books, nothing, just learnt the moves of the pieces and played engines of differet strenght. Besides, I used to play in other site where engines are, unfortunately, not banned. I can differenciate easily an engine from a human player, especially if that player is rated 1600. The opponent I was talking about before, did exactly what an engine would have done. To make even more sure, I analized the games after my inevitable defeat, despite I didnt need to do it, and yes, his moves were perfect, my computer agreed in everything he did from the moment he saw he was losing. The point is that in a 9 people group, only 3 people would pass, and he was like the fiveth in strenght, so since he started losing, against me, the seventh rated, there would be almost no way to pass. So I guess he used it againt me to make sure he goes to next round. I am going to keep an eye in the other games to see his behavour. However, how does this affect the tournament? Negatively, of course. Without talking about the non fairyness, I am thinking in resigning from all the games in the tournament, as I have been cheated, and even if I coild defeat some of the others, enough of them to pass, I will have to deal with my dear friend in the next and final round. My quit in all the games will make a negative effect on the other players in the tournament, but I will not play in a game in which I know there is no possible way to win, and I have been treated like that. I have talked to the creator of the tourny but of course he can do nothing, and of course, a couple of games, perfect games, proves nothing, I guess, to ban someone.

I ask myself, why cheating? And what have I done to deserve that? I was looking forward playing in that tournament, and now that happens...

It has even affected me in my real life (just some angry, dont think I am going to comite suicide).

I would think that if a blitz grading is way way higher than online, then that is suspicious. Online you have more time to plan and think, with the incidence of errors being lower though they still occur.

Hello everyone thank you all for putting up your comments much appreciated. Next time i'll try looking for those things that were pointed out. Here's what happened to me. First I haven't played chess in some years. but before I put the wood up to collect dusk I studied for years (5) and read numerous books thus bringing my rating up to a little over 1700 (otb) After a friend inspired me to start playing again I went on line to play. Now I know I may not be as sharp as I was a couple years ago but after I was crushed (and I mean crushed) by a 1500 rated player I became a little suspicious. It's not the fact that I was beaten by a 1500 rated player; but the way he mated me (knight & rook). I don't have any chess programs so I emailed myself the (PNG) the gmae and went over it. Once I looked at the game I was convienced he must have cheated some kind of way which prompt me to do a chess cheater search online and to my suprise I understand this internet chess cheat in a really big issue. I really don't know what to say but Wow!!! Maybe I'll start playing in the park (14st) again where there isn't any programs on hand.

One way to avoid cheaters is play tournaments with 1day & big groups, that way they don't have the time to input all the data!

    ATTENTION!!!

    DONT BE LAZY, READ THIS!!!

I'm wondering how cheaters feel when they get defeated :P lol... You definitely won't see them in lightning or bullet games - takes too long to insert moves. A very good tip is to check out user's profile. If his/her bullet/lightning rating is low and blitz and higher timing games rating is high, way higher than bullet/lightning, you can probably tell that he/she is cheating.

I think it can be difficult to spot a cheater. Some of the points are valid here however I would add caution to assuming someone is cheating. Take me for instance I can play very well if I have a lot of time to think about the positions in front of me and I am rated 1500 on turn base and I submit for computer analysis to most of my games and a good percentage have 1-2 blunders and many mistakes, but now and again I have no blunders and few mistakes depending on how straight forward the game ensued. But on blitz games of 10 mins or under I can panic with the time pressure as I suffer from anxiety anyway and therefore is not a true reflection of my tactical capacity. I reckon the ceiling for me to reach would be about 1750 thats about as much as I am capable of probably.

However it does make me wonder when my opponent is seemingly unbeaten.

When chess engines play against each other, do they reach a lot more stale positions? Do engine users draw their games a lot more? (especially against other engine users)

Hey I have a question, If anyone can answer me I would them a lot,

I dont know if this is cheating but the other day i was playing againts someone whose blitz was 888 he/she beat me then the blitz went from 888 to 1015!!! How come is that possible, if when you win your blitz doesnt increase by more than 15 points?!! It has also happen to me againts other people not win the same blitz but once they got their double their rating increased like crazy

one of my friends catches cheaters after the game is over. he will pull out rybka or fritz and put the game in and if his oppenents moves matched the computers too many times he would accuse them of cheating. but thats if their moves match the engines like a random example 23 moves straight matching rybka or fritz he would report it.

I can agree with some of the things stated in this columnist's article, yet somethings about it just eek me.  To say a person is unable to develop skill with specific pieces for example, the Knight is entirely wrong.  True, to wipe out all 15 pieces with a simple Knight(s) is nearly impossible, but is not.  To say a person who has skill with pieces and can read a board may not be a cheat, but a person with experience under their belt.  Personally, since about the age of 5 and for the last 19 to 20 years, the Knight has been and will always be my most favorite piece on the board.  I worked all my life to develop my skill using strictly the Knight.  Yes, I eventually do move other pieces for cover them, but fight to keep them safe more than a rook or bishop or even my queen, I love them so.  With my love of my Knights, my uncle back in 1997-1998 was teaching me a three way style defense so I was better able to protect my pieces and still work with my Knights.  It was not until this year that I was at last able to even do the complicated moves perfectly to end with a draw, as he told me "If played properly, that a stalemate or a draw would insue."  Does this make me a cheater...?  According to your declarations, it does.  I say, I worked hard to perfect my game and proud to hover at my usual average of 1000 to 1250...  *for those keeping track, this is based on other chess games and face-to-face play.

The second issue I have with this article is the statement, if you are beaten by someone with a higher rating than you, what more do you need.  it is obvious they are a dirty cheat.  You must have had some horrid experiences with people beating you who are higher ratings.  I say, it isn't if they are a higher rating that worries me, it is those winning 100% of their matches, or who are low levels killing you at every turn.  Sure, people have bad streaks and good streaks, but that is the nature of the beast.  If they are higher rating than you and win, I would not simply say they are cheating.  Maybe I made mistakes & they capatilized on them, or maybe they simply played a better match than I.

Third, someone who uses an international selection as their base of location in the world.  So, there are people who use the international instead of a country of origin.  What is the matter with that?  Maybe, they do not want people to know where they are.  Or, maybe they are like me.  You know, I love different cultures and societies that I study them outside of chess.  I consider myself not a citizen of the United States any more a citizen of planet Earth.  I am in part bi-lingual with at last count 85% fluency rating in reading and speaking of French, I am slowly improving daily my use of the Japanese language, I plan to eventually study Gaelic and Welsh Gaelic and Scotish Gaelic, I also plan to eventually travel in my life to different places around the world.  Hence, my international declaration of location.

Concerning FrustratedGrandmaster, I could not agree more.  Sometimes, cheaters have a tendency to make you want to pull your hair out of your head.  I have only once ever encountered a cheater and it ticked me off later when he told me that he was after our game.  It was not here on chess.com thankfully and it was way back in 2003 when I first started looking to online chess.  It was actually through a instant messanger service game.  But to say, they are continuously countering your moves, does not always mean they are cheating.  It is with the combination of all other things that marks a person a cheater.  Sometimes, they do have excellent vision of the board and even a newb is able to sometimes play an excellent game.  About the long stalls for moves, unless you are playing live chess, the online chess has days set out here...1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, & 14... so to say that they are stalling for moves and that indicates a cheat, maybe they had other things that happened.  I have before lost internet during a game and when I came back, the person thought I cheated because I won.  He claimed I used a cheat engine and it was during the next game, that I discovered he was actually using one himself and I found a way of defeating it due to the programing not being up to par with that of a human intution taught from an early age to play face-to-face chess.

On a personal note, I do not understand the need to cheat.  It is a game meant for fun.  True, the game of Chess originally was meant for darker reasons in its history, but no matter win or lose, I enjoy playing the game.  I just like it to be a well thought out game that keeps me entertained and if that means an opponent needs to cheat to do so, than they are only cheating themselves because eventually, they won't find anyone who'll play them and they'll be alone in this world.

I saw players losing in a way they would never have thought of in Blitz chess that they called you 'cheater' while you utterly dominated them with your own clearsightedness ! So you can never be sure...

I happen to be playing a cheater at this very instance. How do I know they're cheating you might ask. Well for starters they tried attacking with their queen before even developing any other pieces which led to me quickly capturing both their rooks and for pawns while only giving up a bishop in return. Now they are taking extremely long periods of time to move and making moves that only a supercomputer could calculate. Also they are rated 300 pts above me. Not sure how someone rated 1600+ Opens in such a manner and relinquishes that much material, especially given that this person's record against other quality opponents is exceptional. Just saying...really close to just resigning. It takes the fun out of playing.
