What chess is

Submitted by TalFan on Sun, 01/06/2008 at 7:17am.

I had discovered this quote online , and it's probably one of my favourites .

If Chess is a science, it's a most inexact one. If Chess is an art, it is too exacting to be seen as one. If Chess is a sport, it's too esoteric. If Chess is a game, it's too demanding to be just a game. If Chess is a mistress, she's a demanding one. If Chess is a passion, it's a rewarding one. If Chess is life, it's a sad one.

This is what my favorite chess hero had to say about that:

"The chess player combines the power of the pieces to reach a goal pictured in his mind and in the minds of those who understand the rules of play. But, in addition to skill, which is a prerequisite of art, there is the element of competition in chess, which is its own measuring rod. A game of chess is not necessarily esthetic because it ends in victory. If, however, the result is achieved within the confines of standards of economy, beauty, brilliancy, and solvency, it may well be artistic."
