E5 and C5

Submitted by VLC on Mon, 05/12/2008 at 4:04am.

Why do a lot of weak players play E5 against E4 while a lot of strong players play C4 against E4? Is it better to play C4 than E5 against E4 or is it just random?

Vincent, It actually doesnt matter which opening you choose just as long as

1) You enjoy playing the opening

2) You understand the formations /plans and tactics in the opening

 3) The opening is sound

Weaker players play 1...e5 first because its the first opening (open games) people learn as a beginner. Once they improve ,they learn different openings and sometimes change over...Like as you say, to the Sicilian (1...c5) or maybe to something else.

When I was learning I went from 1...e5 to 1...e6 1...c6 to 1...c5 to 1...e5 and 2...d6  and back and forth between them all.

Its just a matter of what/who is influencing your chess as a given time.
