My first GM scalp!

Submitted by Zenchess on Sat, 02/23/2008 at 1:30am.

Today is a great day for me, for I have finally beat a GM in an even game.

It was a 5 0 (5 minute game with 0 second increment) game.   I was rated about 2000 at the time in the 5-minute ICC pool (5-minute pool is VERY hard to get

rating in, even the best gm's can only be around 2600).  He was rated 2300.

To top it off, the GM I beat is one I know of, Eugene Torre, who you may

know from the Bobby Fischer radio interviews (he arranged to get bobby on the

air).

True, it was a win on time, but you can see I hung in there and was playing

faster than him so I ended up with a win.  Next time I'll post when I beat a gm

in the position! ^_^

And for your enjoyment, here is the game.  At the end of the game i had 10 seconds remaining.  You can see I was very lucky to not get mated!  A very

close game.

revolting,

he had to take with f4 because the knight was forking the queen and king.

Props on winning, even if it's on time. That's still really impressive, you have to be fantastic to get to that point, so thumbs up.

Sorry I was mistaken there, was saying moves without looking at a board, instead of Nb5 I should have played Nd2 and while he is better,he is not dominating.

"Sure, a win is nice, but the statement "but you can see I hung in there and was playingfaster than him so I ended up with a win" is only half true: You were playing faster but you didn't hang in there. You were hopelessly lost at the end. The only reason he didn't win is that he was too slow."

I already stated in my comments to the game that I knew I was lost in the final

position.  However, the 'hanging in there' that I referred to goes back a few

moves, to before I played Rb8 + and I had a decent position.

Keep in mind that to get the position he got, he sacrificed a lot of time.  He

made a big gambit, so to speak.  And in the end, the gambit was too much

and he lost the game.  That is the right way to look at a 5 minute game in

which the 'clock is a piece' according to popular lingo.

after Qh1+ what if Kg4, then maybe Rg2+ to win your queen?

You really did get lucky, you were about to get mated!

43 ...Qh1+  44. Kg3 Qg2#

Still, looked like a good game.

And revolting: He couldn't play Qxg7 as he was in check.

to add to my last comment i know you were in check that move but i'm sure you were aware of the Qxg7 mate. i think it's cool how you managed to find a checkmate with your material disadvantage aswell :D.

good game and well played but you say that you won on time? well at the end your last move was pxf4, you know if you played Qxg7 you had mate?
