Warning when about to lose on time?

Submitted by Zenchess on Sun, 04/06/2008 at 2:55am.

I just lost another game on time.  This is what drives me nuts about chess.com.  I have lost a TON of my games on chess.com on time.

This recent game, there was no 8 hour warning that the game was about up on time.  On top of that, 8 hours was never enough warning for me anyways.  For a 3 day time limit, why can't I get a warning when there is 24 hours left?  Arrrrggg.

Eric sent me a message asking what I suggested for site improvements.  Wow - these guys really do care about their users! :P

hello Zenchess,

The key is try to ask yourself.... how often you visit the site? if you seldom visit the site,  and your visits were irregular or unpredictable then try playing not less than 5 days/per move. In this case, you might not loose by timing-out.

I have several opponent i played with, 10-14 days/move but we finished the games in less than a day or two. I assumed that the challenge was not litterally 10-14days/move.... and that it was all for prevention of timing-out.

If you want to enjoy playing without waiting too much for your opponents move, try the live chess.

sincerely and my regards to your playing chess.Cool

Likesforests has several good suggestions. Bottom line is, don't rely on your memory for how much time you have left in games. Check your games list every day and make a move in every game with less than 24 hours left. If you cant check your games list every day, make a move in every game with less than 48 hours left and don't play time limits of 1 day per move.

Sorry to hear that Zen, timeout losses are no fun for either player.

1. Make a daily habit of visiting chess.com (then no surprises).

2. Use MS Outlook or MS Scheduler (built into windows) to remind yourself.

3. Get a premium account for $30/yr (timeout protection).

well, one solution is that you can make sure you are in distance of a computer wherever you go. or you can upgrade to a premium membership. it puts you on vacation every time you are close to losing on time.

The difficulty lies in not expecting that you are running out of time because you forgot about it =)

Is it really that difficult to take a few mins to check chess.com once a day?
