Bad Days???

Submitted by Ziaphere on Wed, 10/31/2007 at 1:22pm.

I wonder sometimes, am I losing cause I'm having a bad day or do I just need to learn how to play chess? Today is one of those days for me. I lost several games today due to bad moves. Really bad moves.

Being that I'm still kinda new and I'm a nobody in the chess world I wonder who would read this. If you are reading this though, my objective here is to come up with some plan to improve my game. This is where I need your guys help.

I know how to move the pieces and that's about it. I truelly play freestyle if that's even what you would call it. I do try to plan moves in advance and normally can see 2 sometimes 3 moves ahead on most opponents. Other then that, I kinda suck. Most of my good games where won by the pieces happening to be in good places. I don't know of any openings nor do I know what good piece positioning is. I would love for some recomendations of what my next step should be. Please feel free to comment on my games too, espesially if I played you.

Thanks!

Dont feel too bad, i have been playing chess for over 35 years and let me tell you we all have those days where no matter what you do it just isnt right all the way from beginners up to the best in the world. You just have to get past those days and keep trying to improve.

There's an old saying, "Diligence is the mother of good luck". It sorta means that the better the chess player, the more likely they are to get lucky.

If you want to improve, here are a couple good starting places:

  1. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess is often recommended for beginners

  2. Chesskids Lessons cover basic openings, tactics, strategy, and endgames.

As someone who's never studied chess before, you'll probably get the best results by looking a tiny bit at each phase of the game before you delve deeply into any one area. Tactical or endgame study would be the next logical step after that.

But do have fun! If studying becomes work, you won't do it for long. Good luck! Smile
