Chess site addiction

Submitted by Ziryab on Tue, 11/20/2007 at 11:50am.

Okay, I've been here at Chess.com for twenty days now and remarkably I'm nearly always here when I'm at my computer. What elements of this site explain its appeal?  I've been playing turn-based chess for four years, so the nature of the site is nothing new. Other sites where I play have tournaments, teams, and better database features--all central to online chess play,--yet, this site seems to captivate my interest.

Well, the forums are pretty active, and that's one aspect of a virtual chess community. Team competition would be another, and that's not here yet.

Speaking of the forums, I believe the capabilities for discussion of chess here have few peers among comaparable sites. I know of one other that permits embedding of diagrams and replayable games (even youtube videos), but Chess.com makes most of this fairly simple. There should be no question that such a facility for discussions of chess strategy has captured a fair amount of my time online the past few days.
