On Magnus Carlsen

Submitted by Zug on Tue, 05/06/2008 at 6:31am.

How about this young fella!?  He's rated in the top ten in the world, he's still a teenager, yet he manages to win or finish in the top three in just about every event he enters.

He's not without his flaws, however.  He manages to make it exciting, losing once or twice every tournament.  He makes up for it, though, by winning many games.  He's kinda like a young version of Topalov in that regard.

My prediction is that he will win the World Championship some time in the next five to ten years.

What do  you think?

I'm rooting for him, not only to win the WC but to make a lasting contribution to the annals of chess. If the kid's already this competitive at this point, wait until maturity connects with sheer talent and his game comes into focus. Looking forward to it.

He's an exciting player to keep your eye on. And speaking of Topalov, Carlsen seems to have some kind of Svengali hold over the guy. Just off the top of my head I recall Topalov resigning in a drawn position against Carlsen and in another game where he had a winning material advantage played the only mistake on the board allowing a mate in 6 from the youngster.
