The fork

Target audience: >1400

The fork is a tactic which attackes two or more pieces of the opponent gathering material of him (ecause the opponent can only rescue one piece at a time). Almost always knights are used to fork because they can jump to a positition where they can attack many pieces and cannot be counter attacked.

Notice every piece can fork and every piece can be forked!

Thanks, alex95. The first and third positions are excellent and instructive.  :)

Regarding the second diagram, 1.d5? loses the passed d-pawn pawn to 1...Nxf4 2.dxc6 Qxc6. White still has a queenside pawn majority and winning chances, but maybe it's better to keep the passed d-pawn on-board. For example, 1.Be3 removes the bishop from danger and creates new tactical threats.
