Combinative Powers

Submitted by kenytiger on Thu, 08/28/2008 at 6:02am.

This is an interesting game in which Black trades his Queen for three minor pieces and then goes for the kill. This game shows that sometimes the powerful lady is no match for the combinative powers of a Knight and two Bishops. In the end, the White King is in the counting house a juicy pawn ahead, along comes a bad check and puts him in the red.

can someone explain why at move 26 - white does not take the pawn at f7 with its rook on d7 - it looks to me like white could force mate shortly after

26.Kg1 could have invited repetition of moves

29.Rxc3, ...Nf3+

30.Kf1, ...Rd1+   (or 30.Ke2,...Rd2+, 31.Kf1,...Rd1+ and we have the same

position as in move 30 of this variation)

31.Kg2, ...Rg1+ (instead of  31....Ng5+)

32.Kh3,...Bf5+

33.g4,....Bxg4 mates

Great game.

I just wonder, why  21. Bxe4? Is it better if white retreat his rook at 22. Rd1? then 23. f3

I thinked the attack of black begun when white prepares to double his rook.

Here is why White resigned after 28...Bc3+: 29.Rxc3 Nf3+ 30.Ke2 Rd2+ 31.Kf1 Rd1+ 32.Kg2 Rg1+ 33.Kh3 Bf5+ 34.g4 Bxg4#. White had other choices earlier, 27.Rxf7 and 28.Qb4, but they lose. 27.Rxf7 Bc3+ 28.Rxc3 Nf3+ 29.Rxf3 Bxf3 30.Rc1 Re6+- with the idea of doubling rooks to play Rd1+. 28.Qb4 c5 29.Qa5 Rd3 30.Qxc5 Bxc3+ 31.Ke2 Rd2+ 32.Ke1 Bd3 33.Qc6 Re2+ 34.Kd1 Re1# or 31.Rxc3 Nf3+ 32.Ke2 Rd2+ 33.Kf1 Rd1+ 34.Kg2 Rg1+ 35.Kh3 Rh1+ 36.Kg4 g5+-.

thanks for clearing things up orejano. but i am not seeing something-why not 5 f3? it open up f2 and i think white can survive, at least for a few more moves.

Very nice game.  They are very advanced players in order to be able to use all the pieces in coordination and also have very good calculating skills!  Thanks for the post.
