Perfect Score in U1600

Submitted by likesforests on Sun, 08/17/2008 at 11:34pm.

I played down in the U1600 section at a tournament this month and walked away with a perfect score. It amazes me when a beginner trying to improve studies advanced books like Art of Attack but neglects mastering basic tactics. Castles made of sand fall in the sea eventually.

  • Study tactics for at least 5-10 minutes daily or face the consequences.

OTB = Over the Board. I played this game in a rated chess tournament.

"No-Name" had an opportunity to find himself down only a rook on turn nineteen, but I didn't spot any weaknesses in your play so I think that he'd be doomed regardless. Good game -- it makes me want to join in on a tournament. I haven't been in one since I was ten, I thought that I'd done something special by coming in first place out of the unrated section. :P

My play should be a little stronger now though -- I've only been studying chess for about two months, but my ratings on these online sites have shot up about four hundred points in that time, and they're still moving upward steadily.

Good game Forests -- I'd love to play you some time, if you're interested. I'm always looking for a loss that I can learn something from. ;-)

I didn't intentionally play down. I'm an experienced chess player but fairly new to OTB tournament chess, so I literally don't know my own strength. The variety of time controls and the fact that the strength of opponents seems more proportional to the size of the prize fund than to their listed rating doesn't help any to figure things out. ;)

Hmmm. Maybe if you play opponents of the same standard you won't find it so easy...

19...Kh8 20 Nxe8 Qxc3 21 Bxc3+ Kg8 22 Nf6+ Kf8 or 19...Kg7 20 Nxe8+ Kf8 21 Qxe5 dxe5. black saves his queen. of course he's also hoplessly lost in both cases. nice game. good luck in the U 1900 section.

SonofPearl, thanks!

BirdBrain, it may not be the most aggressive way to play the English, but it's easy to understand and sets real challenges for opponents. I also play 4.e3, 4.d3, and 4.g3 to make it harder for opponents to prepare for me. :)

sadhumohit, you win 100% of your games. I might credit 2 wins to tactics, 1 win to strategy, and 1 win to endgames. Of course, it's never quite that simple.

I like your opening idea a lot.  When I was first learning openings, I told him I dreamed up an opening with c4, a3, e3 and Nc3 so that I could slowly prepare b4 or d4, and he laughed.  He said that is part of the English.  Of course, I have not studied the English a lot, but you did well with the idea.  You ought to try the mirror cousin of the English sometime, the Bird!
