The King-Side Attack

Submitted by benws on Wed, 08/27/2008 at 6:27pm.

From the 8th move onward in this game, Tarrasch maps out a plan that will decide the game. He pries open the g-file, and posts both of his rooks on it. Then he swings the queen over, which crushes the barriers. Finally von Scheve's king cannot hold on any longer and he must concede.

Tarrasch- "As Rosseau could not compose without his cat beside him, so I cannot play chess without my King's Bishop. In its absence the game to me is lifeless and void, and I can devise no plan of attack."

Nice game - did you mean that 11...Qf6 would be better than 11...0-0? 11...Qe5 isn't possible.

I think that it's that Tarrasch couldn't think of strategems without his "good luck charm", his King's Bishop. Thus he kept it where it was safest -- on f1.

I interpreted that Tarrasch couldn't play without his bishop on the board - and the bishop was right there the whole time.

I'm confused... he said that he cannot play without his bishop and yet he did just that. Did he intentionally do that to prove a point?

Nice attack by Tarrasch, he was one of the strongest players in the 19th century, too bad he could never become World Champion. He defeated Frank Marshall in a match in 1905 but he couldn't beat Lasker for the world title in 1908.
